Azur opts for Veeco MOCVD system
Published on Oct 19, 2009

German company Azur Space Solar Power is getting ready to increase its capacity needs.

Veeco Instruments’ metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) System has qualified for production at Azur.

The system, TurboDisc Arsenic Phosphide (As/P) MOCVD, is the first of several Veeco MOCVD systems to be installed at Azur, and will be used to make concentrated photovoltaic solar cells for terrestrial applications.

Azur’s range of products covers various types of silicon and III-V solar cells on germanium. According to Azur, all the GaAs based cells now produced are prepared by MOVPE on germanium substrates. Also at this time only triple junction cells of the GaInP/GaAs/Ge kind are in production, either without or with internal protection diodes. These cells are used for space application and for custom designed terrestrial photovoltaic concentrator systems.
