Californian media company reduces daily load on the power grid
Published on Nov 5, 2008
KGO has become the first major commercial broadcast media outlet in California to reach its listeners by harnessing the power of the sun and reducing its use of the power grid.

The firm, in partnership with PG&E and SolFocus, unveiled its new state-of-the-art solar power system. It was done during one of the station's shows and it involved US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the launch ceremony.

The station stated: "It will not only reduce KGO's daily load on the power grid, it will serve as an ongoing test facility for emerging solar technology."

"As a trusted Bay Area news source, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to be a voice for important ecological issues," said Mickey Luckoff, KGO president and general manager. "Solar power is one of many eco-friendly initiatives that deserve increased public awareness."

The project marks SolFocus' first commercial installation in North America, according to Nancy Hartsoch, vice president of marketing, SolFocus. The radio station, which claims it is now the first solar station in the country, bought the system and is eligible to take advantage of California rebates, the company said.

According to sfgate.com, the 20 kilowatts of solar power, installed by SolFocus of Mountain View and Premier Power Renewable Energy of El Dorado Hills, provides 25 percent of the station's transmitter power needs at this point.
