Intelligence Brief

US and international experts in the CPV industry are making headway in 2010

20 January 2010

As commercialization moves into its second year with launches into large-scale solar deployments, both distributed generation and utility scale, there will be a discussion assessing the state of the industry. The key question being what will it takes for the industry to reach the first 100 MW milestone, and how will industry leaders address both the thriving opportunities and the significant challenges which abound.

Hansjörg Lerchenmueller, CEO, Concentrix Solar provided an insight into what to expect in the year ahead:

“CPV will be the most cost effective solution for solar electricity in the sunbelt and due to its low environmental impact it will be easiest to implement in large scale. In the past 12 month we achieved a breakthrough both in manufacturing and field operations of CPV power plants – already today we reach system efficiencies above 25%.”

However, in order for the industry to move forward quickly and swiftly, there is a need for the whole value chain to come together and organize themselves for success. For such purpose CPV Today, the leading intelligence provider in the CPV space, is organizing the 2nd edition of the flagship event in San Diego which spearheads those in the field to meet, collaborate and create an industry business plan for 2010.

The 2nd Concentrated Photovoltaic Summit  taking place on February 2-3, has attracted the leading CPV developers such as SolFocus, Concentrix, Amonix and Opel as well as the leading renewable energy developers and financiers such as the US Department of Energy, Nth Power and San Diego Gas and Electric to breakthrough into new frontiers. And this year is taking industry collaboration to the next level:

“Following last year´s feedback, this year we are going beyond previous years and providing a e-Networker platform for all attendees to meet online pre and post conference” says Heidi Hafes, event director for the 2nd CPV Summit “this means that the time that all the stakeholders are together at the summit will be best taken advantage of, since attendees will come prepared with a list of who they want to meet with and with meetings scheduled even before they arrive”

All of the delegates, speakers and sponsors will be contactable through e-Networker and group conversations can be started through this tool. There are great hopes for CPV but the fact remains will they deliver their promise of being the lowest cost and most efficient renewable technology – that could even compete with traditional fossil fuels? Conversations are starting already in the e-Networker in preparation for the 2nd Concentrated Photovoltaic Summit USA 2010.
